A full wardrobe, nothing to wear, and a quiet sense of having lost track of what suits you? Here's how to tell it's time.
By Imogene Whittle, Founder and Lead Personal Stylist, Spree with Me
Struggling to put outfits together each morning is an all too familiar problem…
Nearly every enquiry I receive begins the same way: a full wardrobe, nothing to wear, and a quiet sense of having lost track of what actually suits you.
A wardrobe audit sounds like a big undertaking. More often than not, it's one of the most transformative things you can do for how you feel each morning as you get ready.
It’s about the ease and clarity that comes with confidence in getting ready. And to do so, it requires an honest look at what you own: what's working, what isn't, and what your wardrobe says about who you are right now.
Here are five signs it might be time for you to have a wardrobe audit:
Reduce uncertainty by first refining your signature style, decluttering your wardrobe, and curating a vision.
1. You open your wardrobe and feel less than inspired
It's a bit ho-hum. You feel blank, or worse, overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things you own and the absence of outfits that feel exactly right.
Many women tell me they've tried to sort it out on their own and stalled halfway, because every decision felt too hard to make alone. I very often hear, I could not have done this without you.
I think it’s quite sad when women dread getting ready each day. I think that the joy of preparing what to wear has space to be one of the quieter pleasures of your day. You are your canvas. Your wardrobe is how you show up in the world: how you want to feel, how you want to be seen, and what you want to say about yourself before you've said a word.
Don't spend another morning disheartened because you can't pull together an outfit you're happy with, or stuck in comparison-itis.
That blank feeling is often the result of years of pieces bought without a plan, without focus or vision. And it doesn’t always mean that you actually need more clothes.
It's a clarity problem, and a wardrobe audit is where clarity begins.
In a real Style Queen’s wardrobe: when options feel endless, overwhelm is real.
2. Your wardrobe reflects an old version of you.
Bodies change. Lives change. Priorities, careers and relationships all shift over time. Yet most of us keep dressing for a version of ourselves that no longer quite exists.
Sometimes it's a milestone birthday that makes you notice: turning 40 or 50 and realising you're still dressing much as you did twenty years ago.
Sometimes it's a new role or moving into retirement, sometimes it’s coming out the other side of the baby and toddler years after a long stretch of dressing for practicality above all else. Sometimes you just want to be like Stella and get your groove back. Sometimes your body has simply changed, and half your wardrobe no longer fits.
Whatever the reason, the result is the same: clothes that feel dated, a style that feels older or more pragmatic than the woman wearing it, and no clear idea of what comes next.
We want every item in your wardrobe to fit, feel genuinely good, hold good memories and make you think, yes, I look great in this. Anything that doesn't meet that bar is taking up space, both physical and mental, that belongs to the person you are now.
I understand that clothes often hold strong memories, that sometimes you need a little help to let go, and that it's completely normal to change shape over time. There is no judgement here, just a warm, efficient process that leaves you feeling like a weight has been lifted.
3. Getting dressed takes longer than it should, and still doesn't feel right.
You try three things, dismiss all of them, go back to the first one, change your mind again, and leave the house feeling vaguely unsettled. Sound familiar?
Perhaps you love something on the hanger, only to put it on and feel it's all wrong. Or you've lost track of which shapes, lengths and colours flatter you now. Even women who have had their colours done often tell me they're not sure how to translate that into what they actually buy and wear.
Getting ready doesn't need to be this hard. When your wardrobe is cohesive, with everything easy to find, easy to mix and match, and suited to you, the whole process changes. You open the doors, decide in minutes, and walk out feeling like yourself.
That ease is available to you. It starts with understanding the shapes and colours that flatter you most, knowing how you want to be seen, and having a clear vision for your style. That's exactly what a wardrobe audit, which begins with a style consultation, helps you build.
4. You reach for the same few things every week and ignore the rest.
There's nothing wrong with a self-appointed uniform. Chosen deliberately, it can work beautifully. But if you're reaching for the same pieces out of habit rather than intention, and you're quietly bored with all of it, that's a rut.
It also raises a useful question. How much of your time do you spend working, at home, at functions, on date nights or out with your girlfriends? Do your clothes reflect how you actually spend your life? Most wardrobes have an excess in one area and a gap in another: twenty dresses and one good pair of trousers, for example, or workwear for a job you left three years ago.
A wardrobe audit helps you see this clearly and build a wardrobe that genuinely matches your real, current life.
“The goal is to be able to open your wardrobe full of clothes that you love, and know the options that work together, that everything fits you and has a place in your life.
Pieces that effortlessly mix and match to be worn in different ways...
At this point, you’ll feel a big shift.”
Shop with intent. Even if it’s on sale or gifted, it’s taking up valuable space in your life and in your wardrobe.
5. You keep buying things that don't work with anything you own.
We've all done it. Something catches your eye and seems to fit beautifully in the change room. Six months later the tag is still on, because you have nothing to wear it with, or it never sat quite right once you got it home. Online shopping can make this worse: sizing varies so much from brand to brand that it's easy to end up with a pile of near misses.
Often what's missing isn't more clothes. It's the glue pieces: the quality basics that tie everything together and make your favourite pieces feel complete. A great t-shirt. The right pair of trousers. One versatile jacket.
At the end of every wardrobe audit, you'll leave with a personalised wishlist: a clear guide to the types of pieces missing from your wardrobe and what would make everything you already own work harder. You can shop it with us or on your own. Either way, you'll be shopping with direction instead of hope.
What a wardrobe audit actually looks like
A wardrobe audit, sometimes called a wardrobe styling session, is a hands-on session in your own wardrobe with a personal stylist. We begin with a style consultation, talking through your goals, your lifestyle and how you want to feel. Then we work through your wardrobe together, trying pieces on and identifying the ones that truly suit you, the ones you may no longer need, and the combinations you haven't tried yet. I can show you how to shop your wardrobe and style pieces you already own in new ways, and together we build a wishlist of what to add next.
By the end, your wardrobe will be filled with things that fit, look great and feel like you. You'll also have a clear, purposeful vision for where your style is headed.
I've worked with women of all ages and sizes. I hold no judgement over what you have kept or why. We keep the mood light but we are efficient, and by the end most women tell me they feel like a weight has been lifted.
Wardrobe audit, shopping or colour analysis: where should you start?
If you're unsure whether to begin with a wardrobe audit, a shopping session or colour analysis, you're not alone. It's one of the questions I'm asked most. For most women, the audit is the right first step, because it shows us exactly what's missing before you spend anything new.
